Crey Industries Investigation: Subject, Jack Zodiac

Intelligence indicates that the subject, Jack Zodiac, is a legal citizen of both the United States of America and the British Isles. Records in both nations reveal that he is a man named Jonathan Celeste, and has made no efforts at all to keep his identity secret. Furthermore, while there is no birth certificate available, in-depth analysis of property ownership shows that Jack Zodiac is, at least, four hundred years old. More extensive research into the Celeste family indicates that he may even be closer to six hundred years old.

Upon investigating his familial history, we have determined that his father, also named Jonathan Celeste, has no known date of birth or death. There is no named mother for Jack Zodiac recorded, but there is a woman named Silvia Steadsworth listed as birthing a son. A half-brother named Edward Celeste is stated to have been born on June 17, 1514 and was proclaimed dead in 1532 after a fire destroyed the small home their father had built for him during his years of study in Ireland. The mother is listed as having been born in 1498 and was announced deceased on September 17, 1549.

Further study into the father, Jonathan Celeste, reveals more about the subject, Jack Zodiac. A famed magician, Celeste had made a definitive mark on the occult community of the mid to late 1400s and early 1500s. Supposedly a member of the Rosicrucians, he may well have been several centuries old as well, attributing to the subject's questionable agelessness. Recovered diaries and notes from fellow magicians of his time make it explicitly clear that the mother of the subject was a demon, more specifically a succubus, who Celeste had encountered in the dream world, overpowered, and impregnated. This creates several difficulties in determining a specific origin for Jack Zodiac. Nothing more about his demonic familial ties have been determined at this point.

What is known about the subject after his birth is broken speculation based upon secondhand accounts of incidents involving a young man named Jonathan Celeste. Shortly after being born, he was abandonded on the steps of an abbey in Northern England. This, we know, is true; because in 1503, he was officially excommunicated from the church and branded a witch. We can surmise from this that his elemental powers manifested around this time, and that they are nearly natural in origin considering he would have had no contact with any kind of occult study during these years. We can also assume from this account that his age is closer to five hundred years than previously thought.

There are no solid facts as to his whereabouts over the next decade, only that a few minor magicians and a couple of well-known occultists have recorded in their notes and diaries that they were sought out by a young boy claiming to be the son of Jonathan Celeste during this time. These accounts place him everywhere from Spain to Germany and Italy. The next definite destination of his was the small Irish town of Kelsey, home of his half-brother Edward. Coincidentally, his visit to Kelsey occurs in 1532, the year of his brother's death. Unfortunately, months are sketchy at this point, and it cannot be said for sure if Jack Zodiac was involved in the incident.

Over the course of the next century, he is mentioned to have traveled the naked Americas, reportedly searching for his father. Various Native American, Central American, and South American tribes speak of pale gods that walked among them, teaching them magic and learning their own. Eventually, however, he seemingly gives up his search and attempts to settle down in the budding colonies. To this day there still stands a small home in Virginia belonging to one Jonathan Celeste, protected from demolishion by state legislature. We dispatched a team to investigate the home and found three stone crosses south of the house on a hill. The two larger crosses were marked for Alexandra Celeste and Jonathan Celeste, and the smaller cross marked for Annabelle Celeste. It can be safely assumed that his wife and daughter (and possibly an older son) are deceased.

During the course of the next couple centuries, Jack Zodiac acquires the deeds to several properties: a small house in Philadelphia, a home in Smithport, Rhode Island, a large piece of land in Ireland, a home in Kyoto, Japan and a small island off the coast of South America. He is reported to have done a lot of traveling, mostly though Europe and Asia, during this time. For our part, we have tried desperately to gather information about his actions during the late 1600s, 1700s and early 1800s, but have had no such luck.

Early in the 1800s, he returns to America and begins speaking out against slavery alongside other such philanthropists of the time. There is no mention, during this time, of him publically displaying his powers in any way, though. The only account of any actions taken by Jack Zodiac during this time period comes from Nemesis himself, who has been overheard to have recognized him as an activist for the freedom movement, and one of the Brass Prince's earliest opponents after his pursuit of immortality. Late into the 1800s, close to the turn of the century, he moves back to Smithport, now Paragon City, and watches the budding megacity grow.

It was here, in 1931, that a demon named Tophet attempted to take Jack Zodiac's life. Onlookers described the creature as a tall, humanoid male with pitch-black skin, blood-red eyes, and spiring rusty horns twisting from his chin and crown. Though most of the bystanders that day have passed away already, the few who live today, and were very cooperative with our inquiries, reported that the demon kept mocking Jack Zodiac with the word "brother". This may be the only link to a demonic family that we have stumbled upon. Whether or not he truly was his brother, he was somehow able to seal away a huge portion of the subject's magical powers at the cost of some of his own. After this, he fled the scene and has not been encountered in Paragon City since.

In 1933, he helps the Dream Doctor found the Midnight Squad, a group of mystics and magical heroes who banded together to ward off the Circle of Thorns cult. In 1941, he is part of the defensive force that holds back the 5th Column during their surprise invasion of Paragon City's harbor. He joins the fight against the Axis powers in 1942, however he does not return to Paragon City after the war. It is thought that, during this time, he and his associates in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn attempt to lift several mystical artifacts from Hitler's bunkers and safe houses for fear of any government obtaining them again. He is also, for a fact, known to spend the next few years in England at the bed side of his long-time friend Aleister Crowley, who dies shortly after the war.

Jack Zodiac returns to America in 1947 with an inkling more of his lost power, most likely granted to him by his dying companion. In the wake of the attack against Washington by Nemesis, he decides to take a more active role in crime fighting and becomes a Freedom Phalanx Reserve member in addition to a founder of the Midnight Squad. For the next several decades, he fights alongside his companions in their great war on crime. In 2002, during the Rikti War, he volunteers to be part of Alpha Team's assault on the main Rikti troop encampments. He is seriously injured, yet continues to fight alongside the last of his dying friends. After the Rikti flee, he returns to Doctor Science and Hero 1 to take part in the Omega Team offensive. Noticing how broken he must have been, Hero 1 is reported to have knocked him unconscious. Two years after the war, he is appointed by the Federal Bureau of Super-powered Affairs as head of the Modern Arcane Guild of Investigation. To this day, he hold this position and, by association, has unlimited resources in his magical studies, which our investigations have concluded are quite numerous.

It is undetermined whether or not he is in possession of it at this time, but our sources indicate that he has been searching for the Malleus Mundi, or the Hammer of the World, the magical tome that has been sifting through the villain community for the past year and a half. This same tome was responsible for the incident that occurred on October 31st, 2004. The Banished Pantheon opened countless portals to, at least, three alternate dimensions, flooding Paragon City with familiarly grotesque creatures indicative of Halloween. MAGI quickly found a means to seal these portals as the city's heroes were occupied containing the mayhem caused by them. Another instance believed to have involved the book was the havoc from the Winter of 2004, where a near-limitless army of snow beasts suddenly appeared within the city. No villain group was accused of the event, but the unexplainable arrival of snowmen during an otherwise unseasonably warm winter indicates some sort of dimensional tampering. Other supposed reports of the book's abuse are the arrival of the extra-terrestrial Kheldians last year and the Rularuu invasion from two years ago. However, independent investigations into the Kheldians and the Council suggest that they have been on Earth far longer than we know. And the Rularuu invasion is most certainly unrelated to the Malleus Mundi, however, this report does not require that details of the invasion be mentioned. The most notable consequence of the tome's use is, definitely, the eruption of an alternate dimension existing simultaneously with our world. In the small farming town of Salamanca, upstate of Paragon City, the magical dimension of Croatoa has emerged and unleashed creatures known to have been involved in the Halloween incident of 2004, clearly indicating the book's involvement. Jack Zodiac currently seeks the ancient text in order to contain and, eventually, reverse the incident in Salamanca. Good intentions notwithstanding, we know for a fact that he has been searching for the book since late 2002.
