KNOWN HISTORY: Kelan Rains was only weeks away from being out of grad school when it happened. Personal accounts indicate he would have preferred to waste the time away at the bars or with his girlfriend. During his last semester, he had the unfortunate luck of being assigned to a noted fanatical professor, a Dr. Darrell Swenson. Swenson, a professor in history and anthropology, was a professed fanatic about ancient Inuit civilization. Swenson had dragged Kelan and a fellow student to study newly unearthed burial grounds discovered in the Baffin Region of the Canadian Arctic. After several days of taking pictures and recording Swenson’s notes, Kelan grew restless and apparently wandered off alone one night, exploring the grounds on his own. Not paying attention, he tripped over some equipment left lying near the site and fell forward into one of the graves. Shaken and embarrassed, Kelan pushed himself up from the cold ground, but stopped when he felt something beneath his hand. He brushed some dirt and snow aside to discover a worn ivory pendant with a strange symbol carved into it. Records suggest it was the symbol of Alignak, an Inuit lunar deity and god of weather. Kelan kept the pendant in his pocket as he walked back to camp. According to intelligence research, the next few nights he had visions. Visions of himself and of a growing shadow enveloping the world. A voice of some kind spoke to him and called to him. On the final day of the trip, Kelan had a final surreal vision, encountering a mysterious being and surviving a test that would change him forever. Imbued with control over weather and the power of the darkness of the night, Kelan followed the source of the shadows to Paragon City, to fight back the darkness as Dusk Storm.
