HOTT SHOT
THREAT LEVEL: Low Priority
Mary Elizabeth Schottenheimer was born in New York City, New York, to a amily of career Marines. Her brothers are all Marines. Her father served in Vietnam. Her grandfather served in the Pacific during WWII and again during the Korean War. In fact, one of her ancestors, Augustus Schottenheimer, was one of the U.S. Marines that fought at the Battle of Derne in Tripoli in 1805.
So it was only natural Mary enlist after graduating high school. Within weeks, she saw her first major combat and served with distinction during the first Gulf War, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. She then re-enlisted and served in the Balkans and Somalia. Promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant, Mary was rotated to the U.S. Marine Barracks in Quantico, Virginia, as an instructor in 2001.
At Quantico, Mary quickly established a reputation as an excellent instructor and strict disciplinarian. She also earned a reputation for being quick to anger and earned the nickname "Hott Shot" (purposefuly spelled with "tt" knowing Mary's pet peeve was mispelling her last name by forgetting the second "t") although no one dared call her this to her face! During the Rikti War of 2002, Mary, like all active duty, reserve and national guard soldiers, was transferred to front-line combat. She distinguished herself further during the War, earning three more Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.
Following the Rikti War, Mary was transferred back to Quantico to help train new soldiers for the severly depleted Marines. However, this all came to a head when a newly minted commanding officer, a fresh graduate from Annapolis who was rapidly promoted to fill the personnel gap, arrived at Quantico.
Attracted by Mary's good looks, he kept on harassing her to go to dinner with him. Finally, Mary acquiesced. At dinner, he refused to stop making advances toward Mary and, when he would not accept "no" as an answer, Mary choked him out.
Mary was brought before a court martial and was charged with gross insubordination, battery of a superior officer and conduct unbecoming. Because of her impeccable service record, she was permitted to retire and receive an honorable discharge.
Returning home to New York City, Mary had a hard time adjusting to civilian life but found employment at a private security firm. However, she found real joy in taking to the streets at night and dishing out vigilante justice ... protecting everyday Americans just like she did in the Marines.
Arrested by the NYPD for numerous violations of NYC's strict anti-gun laws, Mary agreed to cease her vigilante activities in the City in exchange for having all charges dropped. Recalling from the Rikti War the warm reception superheroes receive in Paragon City, even superheroes with no "superpowers" whatsoever, Mary packed her meager personal belongings, as well as her sizeable personal arsenal, and caught the first train to Rhode Island. Thus, Gunnery Sergeant Mary E. Shottenheimer faded into obscurity and Hott Shot was born.
